Thank you Doug for this detailed explanation of the inner workings of these various government departments. So, how is this administration going to correct the deficiencies? President Obama is claiming, “heads will roll” and if he can be taken at his word will he terminate (not force to resign) all the managers, department heads, administrators and so on? I doubt it, just like there were no terminations in the Bush administration for 9/11. After reading your essay and if I was in charge I’d fire the entire lot of them; but that will not happen because this is government and I don’t want to be in charge.

For the system to actually function as we all want it to private industry would need to run it. One company in charge of the whole screening and security process; every country, every airport and every airline. Then you would have only one person to blame if there was a failure in the system, the top guy or gal. You hold them accountable and the top person will hold their underlings accountable as well.

Will not work; people would say. It would work because as we all know with history to verify; government is very good at holding individuals and companies accountable and very poor at holding anyone in government accountable. As this plays out over the next few weeks’ months it will prove my comments correct.

Your work does not go un-noticed. I keep pointing people to you sight and talk of your adventures. Take care and looking forward to your writings in 2010.

Of the many op-eds and analysis I've read since Christmas Day, yours is by far the most succinct, the most perceptive and most valuable.

Thank you for devoting the time and thought to this critical issue and to countering the "ill-informed, half-informed and outright ignorant rants" that litter the web."

I honestly don't think that the news media has any credebility. They get it right some of the time, but mostly it's junk mail! They still fear to take on both Houses of Congress about the oversight commities that failed to do their jobs; and all of the unconstitutional, and I might add, illegal "stuff" done afterward!

Doug..... This is BRILLANT! You've hit the proverbial nail on the head. The problem is that nothing 'really' happened. The bomb failed to bring down the plane, nobody died, and this will all be forgotten, by most, in a couple of weeks. We had similar info about the 9/11 ordeal and failed to recognize that as a real threat, too. Isn't there a quote that goes: "Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it"? Happy Holidays to all, old friend. Bob

Whenever Doug starts talking about hometown classmates who are full of it, I slow down my Evelyn Wood speed reading techniques because while I am(both a classmate and full of it), Doug is usually too nice to say it.
We rely on the media to tell us what is going on behind the curtain in Oz, and This gives you the direct view. Post-911 they can't stop this guy, but do investigate when citizens take a little money out of the savings account.
So what was that all about?
So use data to connect the dots, math is the language of the universe. Until then think about:
Muslim Illiteracy-most can't-those who do produce those who attack us. why?
Non-state actors-how to deter or retaliate.
Finally, I commit to staying away from barstools and these topics while in Adel.
Doug..I have a student this year who is the son of one of our classmates. The wheel does turn.

Doug: DEAD ON....this needs to be sent to all the news agencies and NPR and the BBC. Your details and facts are so impressive yet you explain it so clearly. We are at a sad point in this fight as we still to this day cannot work together. I find it unreal. Thanks again. Your work is always a joy to read.

Seems very sad how accurate this is. I've been listening to NPR and all things considered because I'm tired of commercials between songs while I drive during the day. All the news I hear is over and over on adding more scanners and what can be don different and who's fault it was. over and over I hear about how the father went to the embassey in Nigeria to say "Maybe you should keep an eye on my son" Not something normally done by a father hoping to keep his kid out of trouble.

You would think at some point someone would go, hey, maybe we should look into this. But when you have 10 different agencies doing the same job, bit of a problem sorting it out. You need 1 spot, not 10. Every acronim agency does not really need the same warehouse of data.
