Sweet Sixteen

July 30, 2008 – 1:32 pm

The air was so thin our breaths came in deep, raspy gasps.

The wind whipped us with frigid blasts direct from Antarctica.

The sun was setting.

We knew then we left our base camp too late.

We’d already climbed thousands of feet but were short of our goal.

We were running out of light and were still not there.

Then Steph started having chest pain and difficulty breathing. My first thought was high altitude pulmonary edema, but I didn’t say so.

Updated Route Map

July 28, 2008 – 3:07 pm

I updated our route map to include our camp sites from 2008-04-20 to 2008-07-23.

To look at a particular area of our route use the zoom control in the upper left corner of the map. Click and drag on the map to position it.

To view information about a camp site, click on the Google Maps marker to open the info window. The info window includes lat/lon, comments and photos (if available).

The Room of Wakes

July 27, 2008 – 12:27 am

For 391 years no outsider walked the passageways.

For 391 years no outsider touched the walls.

For 391 years no outsider saw the interior.

Just Ask

July 19, 2008 – 2:13 am

10:15 AM

I was sitting at the table outside the gas station using their WiFi to finish our monthly finances when I first noticed it.

It was something on the underside of the truck. It looked like we picked up a branch somewhere and it hooked underneath with the end towards the back of the truck hanging down.

“Funny,” I thought. “Neither of us saw anything on our walk around yesterday morning before we left the beach. We weren’t in any brush there or since.”

I closed my laptop and walked out towards the truck. The closer I got, the more it did not look like a branch.

I reached the side, bent down and examined it.

No, it wasn’t a branch.

It was my worst nightmare.

La Tirana

July 16, 2008 – 2:04 am

Every year there is a festival at La Tirana, Chile.

La Tirana has about 250 full time residents.

Over 10,000 people come to La Tirana for the festival.

This year, we were two of those people.

Fuso Units at Work

July 15, 2008 – 9:12 pm

We visited the world’s largest open pit copper mine at Chuquicamata, Chile today.

While we were there we had the chance to see the trucks referenced in the post “Fuso Units” at work.

The mine uses 94 of these trucks. 60 are Komatsu and 34 are Liebherr.

DG 080

July 14, 2008 – 8:19 pm

Prior to departing for South America I collected a set of GPS waypoints from prior overlanders. They included service locations, fuel stops, points of interest and, most importantly, camp sites.

We like to find our own places, make our own discoveries and generally have our own adventure rather than follow exactly in others footsteps, but, when the sun is sinking and we need a safe, proven place to pull over for the night, the collection of waypoints has been invaluable.

Such was the case five days ago when we pulled into the little town of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile.

Fuso Units

July 9, 2008 – 2:12 pm

Those of you who remember the post “
How Big is Big” will remember that we try to express size in units other than arbitrary measures such as meters or feet.

Today’s example uses units of Fuso.

Yesterday we found something that was at least two Fuso units high. It made the Fuso look not so big.

The Shrine

July 8, 2008 – 9:10 pm
You approach as any new pilgrim would after a long, long journey across the dry, dusty desert.

You approach with trepidation.

You approach with wonder.

You approach with reverence.

Relative Humidity

July 7, 2008 – 2:49 pm

We crossed the border between Argentina and Chile at Chile Chico on 29 March 2008. We drove west until we hit the Carretera Austral and then turned left.

For the next 87 days we were in wet, foggy and chilly areas of Chile.

We spent a portion of that time in the rain forests of Chile, where annual precipitation is measured in meters, as in multiple meters of rain per year.
