People living in tents and their cars just a few miles north of Gulfport. Neither the Red Cross or anyone else was taking care of these people or providing any support. They were refugees from Stone County, the next county north of Gulfport. They came south looking for food and shelter. There were many people living in tents in this area, with reports of many more living in the woods. While there are relief supplies pouring into the urban areas of the Gulf coast, we saw little to no evidence of any support or supplies being provided to the rural and small town areas of Mississippi, even this area just a few miles north of Gulfport.
