We came to Turkey Creek, a small community of 300 people that predates the city of Gulfport, which ended up engulfing and annexing it. Turkey Creek was founded by emancipated slaves after the civil war. The sign reads: "Turkey Creek - An historic black community settled in 1866 by emancipated men and women who, emboldened by slavery and civil war, dared to sow the seeds of freedom, faith and self reliance which flouish here still."
