I went out on the "hero" ride on Monday. Mark Force talked me into it over breakfast. It is all his fault. Here Mark comes up over the first big obstacle of the day, a rock step that ony Jean, our guide was able to ride over.

The small building behind the kids was the town store. Note the electric meters. Unlike Baja, electricity was plentiful in the rural villages.

Local kids. I gave them stickers, but unlike Baja, there wasn't a sticker culture with these kids. The only English words most baja kids know are sticker and wheelie. The kids in central Mexico were not familiar with dirt bikes or dirt riders. We were much more exciting, exotic and mysterious to the typical kid in central Mexico than Baja.

Alex, Ed, Joe, Jean, our guide, and Mark. Jean was a silver medalist on the 2000 Mexico ISDE team. Here's the way things work in Malcolm's world. For my hero ride through the mountains of Mexico, I end up with a kid whose first diaper had a dirt bike attached and has the genes of a future champion (Alex), a guy who races 500cc vet motocross (Ed), a multi-gold & silver ISDE medal winner (Joe), a 2000 ISDE silver medal winner (Jean) and a guy who has raced the Baja 500/1000/2000 7 or 8 times (Mark). What am I doing with these guys?

I still don't know what I'm doing in this picture. I can't ride fast enough to stay in the same zip code with any of these guys. Doug, Jean, Alex, Joe, Ed and Mark.

Our lunch stop and my favorite meal of the trip. This little place is in the middle of this woman's feedlot. She serves anything you want as long as it is dried, salted beef and eggs.
