Seven Days of Baja 2000

Day Five

Gary updates the riders on Malcolm's condition. He had went down the day before and broken his arm when he hooked bars with a guy he was passing.

They had flown Malcolm back to Los Angeles where he'd gotten a cast. He planned to join us again in Loretto or La Paz.

Adam just outside of the fish camp. One of the great pleasures of Baja is giving stickers to the kids. My goal had been to have enough stickers to make it to the kids here, who don't have a lot of worldly goods, but are full of smiles and laughter. I had to dig into Adam's allotment of stickers, but we had more than enough for the dozens of kids scampering around. Like all the small town and rancho kids, these children really appreciated them.

One of the ubiquitous roadside shrines. We must have passed a hundred of them along the way.

Adam and Doug at lunch at Scorpion Bay. Probably the only place that can rival SF Bay for ambiance and view.

Emergency road repairs on the rear pipe mount. This is the type of thing we hoped to learn on the ride, i.e. what needed to be re-engineered and strengthened on the new aftermarket items.

Close-up of where a rock cracked the left engine case and Wayne's JB Weld repair. Another lesson learned. The carbon fiber guard needed to wrap up higher on the motor.

Lunch at Scorpion Bay, a surf haven. We heard some great stories from Pua Rochlen of his days on the pro tour, surfing around the world and up Baja.

Every night there would be a lot of complaining about how the brutal taskmasters of MSA were going to make us ride on the beach yet again tomorrow. Not.

Adam getting ready to take off down the beach. By this time he was feeling good on the bike and riding great. Easily keeping up with dad in almost all sections.

Adam in front of the jail in the old oasis town of Comondu. This is another magical place seemingly frozen in time. Adam was pretty frustrated that he didn't speak Spanish. We were surrounded by lots of local kids and people. Everybody was friendly, but we couldn't communicate beyond smiles and hand signals.

Cam hosted a reception at his beach house in Loretto for all of the riders and the support crew. He had some bottles of his vineyard's new Chardonnay available. It was judged excellent by the band of roving wine judges among the riders.

Cam had recruited one of the local restaurant owners to cater the food. They had prepared over 100 lbs. of ribs.
